John C. Harley, Ph.D., CEO

Dr. John Harley is a dynamic technology and business leader with over 30 years of experience in the MEMS field. He started his career earning a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied microscale heat and mass transfer phenomena. His career is marked by deep industrial experience in design and computer modeling of microscale devices, coupled with many years of microfabrication experience, including process development, design for manufacturing, and transfer of MEMS products from early-stage development to volume production. His experience includes extensive work on biomedical MEMS, Silicon Optical Benches (SiOB) and other optical MEMS, microphones, magnetic sensors, LED backplanes, and micropumps. Responsible for 20 issued and pending patents, Harley is also an accomplished business executive with experience in mergers and acquisitions, sales, marketing, and C-suite leadership. In his most recent role as President of Miltenyi-Owl Biomedical, he led the company to unprecedented increases in MEMS chip production and yield improvement, resulting in production of the world’s fastest MEMS cell sorter system for clinical immunotherapy applications. Harley is currently CEO of Tiny Matters, Inc. and a Managing Partner in Silicon Catalyst, and is active in technical and business consulting in the global MEMS industry.
